Finally, about 2 and a half years after the release of 2000's Binaural, Pearl Jam let loose another mamoth achievement in Music. The album this time around is entitled "Riot Act". The title itself really does describe the sound of the album. The album has the most "live" feel of any Pearl Jam studio album since 1994's "Vitalogy". This albums brings together some of the best elements of their past albums. Here is a track by track review of this great record...
1. Can't Keep
-Anyone who has heard the Ukelele version of this by Eddie when he played it solo will know that at the time it was a fast song. Eddie himself called it "Thrash Ukelele". It was like a punk song. Before the album came out I thought if this song was indeed on the album it would be a Lukin-esque rocker. I couldnt have been more wrong. In a slower paced fuzzy guitar drenched, acoustic laced, Zeppelin back-beat filled song could have easily been placed on the band's last record Binaural. I was a bit disappointed that it wasnt the rocker I had hoped for, but after my intital listen I was pleased it wasnt a hard rocker. THis song has one of the best Pearl Jam drum beats I have ever heard. Very, Very Zeppelin 4-ish. My favorite album opener since 'Brain of J'.
2. Save You
-Whats that sound? What year is it? Its not 1994 is it? Because this song could have easily been on their 1994 release "Vitalogy". Everything about this song reeks of classic Pearl Jam. Not to mention that Eddie drops the F-word about 9 times. Just a great simple hard rocker. The only thing this song lacks is an actual solo, but I am sure that that will be made up when it is played live. Great song.
3. Love Boat Captain
-This is perhaps the strongest song Pearl Jam have ever made. The beginning sounds like something off of No Code. The organ gives it a strange vibe that almost makes it a somewhat a religious tone. Then comes the chorus that just keeps building and building. The song just keeps building until it reaches its climax at Vedder's profound lyrics..."lost 9 friends we'll never know 2 years ago today"...in reference to the 9 killed at their concert in Roskilde in 2000. Just so much strangth in this song. The solos in this song are just killer. Excellent balance between the soft and the hard. Amazing. Thats the only word that really comes to mind.
4. Cropduster
-The intro to this songs sounds like Rush. That being a very good thing. The one thing I love about this song is that it reeks of visual images and colors. The verse seems a little off kilter, but it makes up for that in the strong chorus "I thought the world, but turns out the world thought me". This song is obviously drawn some of its inspiration fomr Sept.11 and the whole terrorist ordeal afterwards. This song has a very Yeild vibe. Great Melody they work in here. I really enjoy it. It make take a little time to get into at first, but once you do, you won't regret it.
5. Ghost
-This is my favorite song on the album. Everything is so perfect. It has a similar vibe that Rearviewmirror has. This song's lyrics are so excellent. One of my favorites..."the TV...she talks to me, Breaking news and building walls"...that line is so perfect. Then we have the awesome solo. There is just so much about this song. It so catchy and great. The ending reeks of RVM as well. Damn. I just LOVE this song.
6. I Am Mine
-Many of you have probably heard this song before. It is the album's first single and has been in heavy rotation ever since. The song has a great waltzy feel to it. The organ just adds another element that song of PJ's songs lacked before. It has a similar vibe to Betterman, but I could definatley see this song on Yeild. The end solo, even though small, just adds a great element not there in the original version of this song performed live a year ago at the Bridge School Benefit.
7. Thumbing My Way
-This is the album's Acoustic Ballad. At first I wasnt a big fan of it. Since then I have grown to love this song. If you are going through a tough time in life and listen to this song, I guarantee you will cry. THis is a gut wrenching song with lyrics from the heart. "No matter how cold the winter, theres a spring time ahead". That lyric right there pretty much sums up...just about everything...for me at least. This song could have easily fit on No Code. Great Song.
8. You Are
-The greatest departure from "normal" Pearl Jam the band has ever taken. It starts off with this very odd almost synth type riff. Then hits this realy blusey Smith/Cure-esque solo. The drum beat adds an awesome elemnt to this song. Then the chorus hits, and it just blow me away. "Love is a tower...and you're the key" belts Vedder. This song is so totally different, yet feels so right. Its a new direction, but at the same time sounds like thats how the band has always sounded. I was really surprised in this song. It blew me away the first time I heard it. I really wanna see how the boys pull this one off Live.
9. Get Right
-All hail Punk Rock. This song could have been on the group's second album "Vs.". It has that kind of feel to it. The chorus is just so Rockin'. The harmonics on the guitars just add to this already kick ass song. Crazy TimeSignature on this one. Then comes in Mike McCready with his fucking kick ass solo. So, so old school Mike. I'm taking 1992-93 old school Mike. He just fuckin' wails. The only thing that lacks is this song...is...the song itself. At only 2:38 it could have been a little longer, but hey...it's a punk song right?
10. Green Disease
-My 2nd favorite song on the album, its this album's Greivance. THe chorus sounds like some '80s pop song. Yet the lyrics are pretty serious. The comes one of the most catchy chorus's Pearl Jam has ever created. An anthem for anyone who has been screwed over by anyone richer than them. This song also has a similar vibe with MFC and I coould have seen this song on No Code as well. AWESOME song.
11. helphelp
-This is one of those Pearl Jam songs that you either Hate or Love. I personally love it. Its got a weird weird vibe to it. Think of like "Push me, Pull Me" but with singing and a badass chorus and ending. Thats pretty much what this song is. I love the way it builds into a strong chorus. The little breakdown part is really great as well. And once again, solos own all.
12. Bushleaguer
-Another one of those, you will love it or hate it types. The song is really cool and different. The little intro riff really gets your attention. When I first heard about this song, I thought it was going to be some little funny song. But it is actually a real rocker. It gets a little slow in the verse so Ed can poke some fun at President Bush. The pre-chorus is so great though. "Blackout weaves its way throught the city"...that part just sounds so freaking cool. The vibe of this song is awesome. Reminds me of some '70s psychadelic song.
13. 1/2 Full
-"No Way" + "Red Mosquito" + "Rival" = 1/2 Full. When I first heard this song, I thought...how the hell did they bring back SRV from the dead to play with them? This is a very Blues-Rock song. I love it so damn much. This is probably my 3rd fave song on the record. There is even a little nod to "Porch" in this song. Very awesome. Eddie belts it out like I've never heard him belt it out before. The guitar on this track...is just...wow. Great song.
14. Arc
-Not really a song. A sorta weird Chant by Eddie for about 30 seconds. I read that Eddie couldnt put some of his grief into words, so he just belted this out. I think it fits pefectly on the record.
15. All or None
-The album's final song. It starts out acoustically. Really gets that "Indifference" vibe right away. This has to eb one of the best songs Eddie has ever written.
"it's a hopeless situation
and i'm starting to believe
that this hopeless situation
is what i'm trying to achieve"
Great, great lyrics. The singing is excellent in this song too. Not to mention the amazing solo Mike pulls out. Man...actually THIS might be my favorite song on the record. It's just so utterly amazing.
Well...thats basically it. All 15 songs, the most on any PJ record. This is my fave Pearl Jam record behind Vitalogy. It has that same edge that Vitalogy had. And the improved production from Binaural really helped alot. The album is released on Tuesday(God Bless Pre-orders). And don't forget that Pearl Jam will be on Letterman next Thursday and Friday. I guess that's about it.
