Best Song: Shoot to Thrill
Solid cock rock.
…by that of course, I mean it's cock rock (AKA songs about sex) that is solid, not rock categorized by… well, you know. But still, AC/DC are still at their prime here, despite the death of lead singer Bon Scott early in the year this was released. They simply picked a replacement, recorded the album, and moved on in his honor. Or something.
It all begins with "Hell's Bells." A heavy rocker with cartoonish satanic lyrics that fit AC/DC's never-too-serious style. The slow ringing of the funeral-like bells sets the perfect tone for the album… Well, no, not really, considering what the album becomes shortly after.
Nope, AC/DC don't mourn Bon Scott's untimely demise. As said before, they push on with their speed-influenced heavy riffage sound. "Shoot to Thrill" is the best track here, and a live favorite for the band. Fast and powerful. Just like everything else here.
"What Do You Do For Money," "Given the Dog a Bone," "Let Me Put My Love into You," and "Have a Drink on Me" pretty much go by the same theme. And that theme is sex. Lots and lots of sex and women. Gotta love dem AC/DC guys. What little they do, they do so well.
"Back in Black" and "You Shook Me All Night Long" are the MAJOR hits here, though. One having one of the best known riffs of all time, and the other being a classic rock anthem for the ages. Again, there's nothing special about the subject matter, but they do it so well you can't help but love it.
And "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" is the last song here, and it's the perfect closer: A bluesy anthem about loving rock 'n' roll.
In the end, Back in Black is just a great party album. Heavy riffs, exaggerated lyrics, loud vocals, banging drums, and a certain level of theatrical silliness that excuses their lack of creativity. Besides, the three main themes to these songs (sex, party, rock) has not gotten old yet, which means they're doing something right.
