Best thing Blink 182 ever did…

Blink 182. Pop-punk rawkerz with a funny bone. That's it. They don't try to be anything better, but what they do it definitely not bad. However, other than some fast guitars and potty humor, they also have a good sense of melodies and know how to write a catchy song.

The opening trio of songs prove this: "Pathetic," "Voyeur" and "Dammit." One's a song relating to teens, the second is hilarious, and the third was a major hit single way back when. That's all there is to these guys. Do they try to be anything else? Nope. What separates Blink 182 from other bands in the pop/punk boom of the late 90's is that they never take themselves so seriously as to show any signs of pretensions. Gotta love that.

Of course, they are fairly limited in what they do. The CD is 15 songs long, and it loses some steam near the end. All of it is good, mind you, but it gets tiresome by song 10 or so. "A New Hope" is funny, for anyone who has ever watched Star Wars. Nice references to the movies, and it's a clever song. Funnier than anything Weird Al ever did or ever will come up with. Send the hate mail, I dare ya.

At this point, the best things Blink 182 ever do are humor and songs about girls. Limited? Yeah, but they do it so well it's easy to forgive them. Case in point, "Dick Lips" (curiously re-titled by AllMusic Guide as "Click Lips"… hahaha) and "Josie" are the true best songs on this album.

What makes this recording better than, say, Cheshire Cat or anything that came after it? Nothing, particularly. But their songwriting is at a peak here, and they haven't become too old to be singing these kinds of songs without looking unintentionally silly. And the humor is still above streaking and doing things with midgets. This is Blink 182 at the top of their game… get it if you like Green Day and the like.
