Lazy, lazy limited release…

Wow, this sucks. In 2000, Blink 182 released a live album for limited release, probably as a cash-in to the success of Enema of the State. Why do I think this? Because out of the first six songs, five are from Enema. Hell, they even follow the SAME ORDER as on that CD. Considering Blink 182 don't really change things up much when they're playing live, it gets annoying.

Of course, not all's bad (or I'd have given it a 1 or 0). The music that's on here is played with spirit an energeny. High energy. Typical of any punk band. Predictably, most of the songs on the album are from their best-selling CDs, Dude Ranch and Enema of the State. Then there are a handful of rarities or new songs (I can't say I know… I know "Family Reunion" isn't new, though), and they even re-named "Dick Lips" for no real reason to "Rich Lips." Plus a studio song, "Man Overboard."

Everything is played fairly well, especially compared to their less-than-spectacular TV appearances. That's where the good ends. Of course, being a live album, there is some stage banter in between songs. It's like The Mark, Tom and Travis Show is 2 CDs in 1: A live album, and a comedy album. And the comedy bits, for the most part, are funny the first time.

The thing about fart jokes is that they get old really, really fast. And there's an over-abundance of them on here. I'm not saying Blink 182 should go ultra-serious like Pink Floyd or something… I just want some restraint. Especially since this album, other than the songs, doesn't sound "live" at all. Everything they say between songs sounds like it was scripted and recorded in a studio… very, very polished. Same goes for the generic-sounding crowd noises.

In addition to their antics between songs, instead of adding some bonus tracks or something, they threw in some (by "some," I mean 20+) spoken jokes. Sometimes I wish CDs didn't hold this much data, but I guess it's an improvement over countless minutes of silence to "hide" a mediocre bonus track. And some of them are funny, so it's not as bad as it could be.

But still, the over abundance of goofing around is enough to be a detriment to the well-played music that is present. And enough to lower the score. This, combined with the fact that none of the songs are better than or worse than their studio versions, and none of the new/previously unreleased songs are anything special are what lowered the score. Thankfully, it was a limited release and should only be a minor blow to their otherwise consistent discography.
