Best Song: Crash Into Me*
...DMB at its best... at least in the studio

So much to say... so much to say... so much to say... Well, not really. All I really have to say is that this is DMB's best studio effort. It's a helluva effort, too. Sure, most of the songs are better in a live setting and jammed out. But the versions present are mostly great.

The set kicks off with "So Much to Say" which starts things off with a BANG. Not a BIG bang, but a bang nonetheless. "Two Step" isn't as good, but it's just fine. And it's rather catchy. So I won't hold anything against it.

And, of course, the title track, "Crash Into Me" is on this disc. The middle-school slow song anthem. Awesome. The memories, the memories... mmmm... Sorry. It's a nice soft, subtle song. Nothing wrong with Dave's horny ramblings, right? *I gave it the "Best Song" award because it's the only song on here that I haven't heard a better version of somewhere else.

"Too Much" kicks all kinds of ass, too. All kinds. Rocks hard. Jazzy. Sho' 'nuff. "#41" is an absolute CLASSIC, live, but it's comparatively stale in the studio. Still a beautiful piece of work, courtesy of Mr. Matthews. Dig that guitar! And it has an excellent jam that segues directly into "Say Goodbye," another nice song. Calming, and stuff. I love it. Very romantic.

"Drive In Drive Out" was one of the songs that stuck out to me upon first listen. It's cool, and it's one of the heaviest songs Dave has done to date. Powerful vocals on dat derr track. "Let You Down" is a soft, loose ballad. Nice contrast to "Drive In Drive Out."

"Lie In Our Graves" is a beautiful, sweet song with some memorable lyrics. "Cry Freedom" is OK here, but not much more. "Tripping Billies" has spunk. Yes, I said "spunk." It's energetic, and fits perfectly between "Cry Freedom" and "Proudest Monkey." Live, "Proudest Monkey" is a fun jam. Lots of interesting instrumental passages, etc. But on Crash, it's the worst song here. Not horrible, but it goes on for some 8 or 9 minutes without anything interesting happening after the first 3. BUT; It's on the end of the album, and not bad enough to hurt the total package.

Crash is the Dave Matthews Band's peak in the studio so far. Somewhat jammy, very catchy, sweet, jazzy, funky... lots of good things going here. Sure, all the songs are better on bootlegs, but it's a fine album by a band that has never been captured well in the studio. And for that, it's the definitive DMB studio album.
