BYOS (Bring Your Own Stereo) is the "breakthrough" album from 1-hit wonder band Jimmie's Chicken Shack who, since then, have all but broken up according to their official site. But they, at least, had a good run, musically.
All their problems (well, sales-wise) come from the hit single "Do Right." Incessant and annoying to some, fun and funny to others, it made the bands look like a comedy act. Actually, it most definitely made them look like sure-fire one hit wonders, and anybody who thought so should give themselves a pat on the back.
But anybody who refuses to check them out because of that song 3 minute track should think again. The band is definitely fun-loving. Split into Side A and Side B (despite being on a CD… maybe it was for the vinyl but got printed on the CD anyway), Side A is stronger than the soft side, with the heavy acoustic "Spiraling," which, well, spirals and spins around. "Lazy Boy Dash" and "Do Right" claim equal stakes as "Anthem for the Lazy People." "Trash" and "String of Pearls" are nice white-trash themed songs. "Ooh" is the catchiest song here, with it's "ooh ooh's" and screaming guitars. "Let's Get Flat," like "String of Pearls," has a relaxing reggae sound to it.
Side B is weaker, but not without its moments. "Waiting" is a soft love song with the best lyrics, composition and subtlety. The side starts out slowly, though, with "Fill in the Blank" and "Face It," two boring semi-rockers that don't hit as hard as anything on side A. "Silence Again" and "Pure" are far better, and "30 Days" is the perfect closer.
The album far exceeds their major label debut, Pushing the Salmonella Envelope thanks in part to some diversity. Instead of sounding like just another rock band, they came a long way to prove they were better than a wall of guitars, some drums, bass and vocals. Lead singer Jimi Haha has talent, despite the joke-band presentation of The Shack.
