Best Song: Visions of Paradise
Well, at least his voice is in top form

Mick Jagger sells out. That's his deal. That's what he does, has been doing, and probably will be doing for a long, long time. It's not a bad thing… the way he follows trends forced to Rolling Stones to become quite the diverse band. Disco, punk, psychedelia, rock, blues, reggae… Whatever. Mick keeps with the times. Nothing wrong with that.

But there IS something wrong with his fourth solo offering, Goddess in the Doorway. As should be expected, dance pop is covered. But what isn't expected is that the entire album is dance pop. See, when your roster of guests includes names like "Bono," "Pete Townshend," and "Rob Thomas," the first thing that pops in your head isn't "Pop."

But, pop is what this album became, and it's not good pop. The opener, the Rob Thomas-penned "Visions of Paradise" is the best song here. Rob Thomas's lyrics and Mick Jagger's voice, with a catchy chorus and some nice beats. Nothing wrong there.

The first single, "God Gave Me Everything" wasn't bad, either. It's the only rock song here, and it's energetic with a nice riff supplied by Lenny Kravitz. Why Lenny seems to be good doing other people's songs and not his own is anyone's guess…

But the rest of the songs are either "bad" or "mediocre." "Joy," the Bono track, is just bad. Irritating, even. "Dancing in the Starlight" has nothing memorable at all. "Hide Away" isn't terrible, and has Jagger's falsetto on it, but isn't special either. "Don't Call Me Up" would be a highlight if it didn't sound exactly like "Always Suffering" meets "Don't Tear Me Up." I can't believe that anyone would stoop so low as to rewrite the same song and keep all but one word of the original title…

"Goddess in the Doorway" and "Lucky Day" are harmless. "Lucky Day" reminds me of the Stones' "Brand New Car," though. "Everybody Getting High" is scary… too much energy… Not enough substance. "Gun" is a lot like "Gunface" from Bridges to Babylon, which is sad. "Too Far Gone" has nothing to remember it by. "Brand New Set of Rules" is the only soft song on here that leaves any sort of an impression at all. I said "at all…" doesn't mean it makes MUCH of an impression.

The album as a whole is just weak. Nothing wrong with dance or pop, but there is PLENTY wrong with making tasteless, tacky albums. The entire affair just REEKS of "I wanna be cool! Dance to me!" But what saves this album from getting a score that is lower than Limp Bizkit's Significant Other (the lowest score on the site thus far) is that the singer is Mick F'N Jagger. His voice is in fine shape throughout, and since this is his album, that's a major selling point.
