Best Song: …too many… "One of Us"
Solid, but loooooooooooong
Ok. So, Prince changed his name to that symbol thing. Ok, good for him. Whatever. After doing that, he decided to prove that he hasn't lost anything by putting out Emancipation, a 3-disc album, each disc timed to 60 minutes, making this the most new material ever released by any mainstream artist at once.
And that's its main problem. Prince is the master of the groove and sexy falsettos. At his best, he's capable of writing some absolutely stunning dance grooves to get the party shaking. But at his worst, he's pretentious. Horribly pretentious, and that's the bane of this album's existence. Three hours? Come on. That is way too much music at once. No matter how consistent it is, people will get tired eventually.
And there isn't a bad song here. It's a VERY consistent record, showing all of Prince's strengths, and some of his weaknesses. Songs like "Jam of the Year" and "One of Us" are great. Awesome instrumental compositions throughout, and Prince himself is in top form for the entirety of this record.
But too much means too much. Three hours his way, way, WAY too much music to digest. It's also too much music to review. The best I can give you is to just get it. Most stores I've seen carrying it sell it for $10, and that's is a VERY good bargain. I'd definitely recommend this three hours to anyone who likes Prince, Soul or R&B. Or anybody with a lot of free time.
