Scarface - The Fix

Overall: 8/10

Scarface has been around for 11 years, since 1991. He’s not too famous, though he has released around 6 albums. He’s one of the most overlooked rappers. He’s from the South, and is arguably the best Southern rapper out there. He released “The Fix” this year, 2002. The first single is “On My Block” and it’s doing VERY well. “The Fix” is currently #4 on the top 200 Album Charts as of August 18, 2002. Scarface has sold a lot of records, but doesn’t get much Mainstream attention.

Track 1 is just the "Intro", a 58 second intro with a depressed man singing. Nothing special, just the opening of the CD.

Track 2, “Safe” is a very good track. Finally, we have a Southern Rapper who talks about something aside from the usual Bling Bling and hoes. He’s talking about his past in the 70’s and 80’s. He talks about seeing neighborhoods destroyed, and the ghetto always struggling. Reminds me of yesterday’s rap, good stuff. The beat, the lyrics, everything is good about this song.

“In Cold Blood”, the third track on the CD, is also a great track. The song is basically him saying that he’s a Cold Blooded gangster, a Natural Born Killa, and a Drug Dealer. Without a doubt, a very tight beat.

Now, a track called “Guess Who’s Back”, Track 4, with Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel. Jay-Z’s verse wasn’t too bad, but what can you expect from Jay-Z? Scarface’s verse was excellent, this guy can definitely flow. The lyrics were awesome too. Beanie Sigel wrote a pretty nice verse. I liked it better than Jay-Z’s. Overall, a pretty good song.

Now, we’re at the hit single, “On My Block”. It’s a very awesome song. The beat, the lyrics, everything is very nice. It has an old school sound to it, and it’s just awesome. The song is about how things are in his neighborhood. He talks about the rough times, and the good times, while saying “My Block” 56 times I believe (According to friend). The video for the song basically shows how things were on his block, without showing Scarface.

“Keep Me Down” comes next. It has a unique sounding beat to it. The lyrics are decent, but the song overall isn’t too great. It might be one of those songs that could grow on you after a while. Basically the song is about somebody who wants to separate Scarface from his family and everything, and try to keep him down.

“What Can I Do” is song 7. I knew what I was in for when I saw the name of the track. It’s a sad, depressing track with a slow beat to fit it perfectly. The singer has like the perfect voice to fit the tone of the song. The lyrics are nice. He literally sounds like he’s about to cry because of the pain he’s feeling. He’s just pouring the words out because he means them. Definetely one of my favorites on the album.

“In Between Us” ****BEST SONG ON ALBUM**** is the next song. It features Nas in it. Scarface and Nas? This has gotta be one of the tightest combinations in rap. Nas’s verse is hotter than the sun, truly amazing. My only complaint on this song is the annoying singer’s voice, which by the way is T-Boz from TLC. She sounds terrible here. The beat has a somewhat fast pace, and sounds good. Scarface’s verse is tight too, but I liked Nas’s better. Excellent song! Best on CD.

“Someday” comes next. Wow, this song is pretty freaking amazing. Especially the opening beat, sounds really nice. It’s the kind of song you want to listen to when you’re relaxing, like I feel very comfortable right now listening to it. He’s talking about God and what he’d do without God’s love. He knows someday God will get him, according to the Chorus.

Next is “Sellout”. It’s about time somebody spoke out about today’s crappy mainstream rap. He’s calling them sellouts, and they’re ruining rap. “There’s too many pussies out here making bullshit records and ruining rap”. Way to go Scarface! The beat is hella tight too. Scarface is saying he’s never gonna sell out, and I believe him.

“Heaven” is the next song, and it’s got a nice beat. It’s a very mellow song and is saying that he found heaven in the form of a girl. Awesome song.

“I Ain’t The One” comes next. The beat isn’t that great, but it’s not bad. The lyrics are pretty decent, but this isn’t the best song on the CD or anything. If I had to rate it from 1-10, it’d probably be a 6. Good for a track to end the CD though, aside from the Outro.

“Fixed” is the final track on the album. It’s very similar to the intro, with the same strange music. Nothing special there.

Final thoughts, “The Fix” is an awesome CD. There were only maybe 1 or 2 tracks that I didn’t like, but it was overall an excellent CD. The best Southern Rapper I know of, and this CD is definitely going to get good play in my stereo.
